- Mail order rose bushes if not done in December.
- The soil in the Carolina's in typically acidic. Apply Lime (1/2 cup) and Gypsum (1/2 cup), around the base of the plant and scratch it into the soil. This increases the alkalinity of the soil. The application of Lime and Gypsum should only be done twice a year, once in early Spring and once in mid Fall. So as not to over or under use these soil amendments, have a soil sample tested, explicitly for growing rose, at the county extension office.
- Clean debris accumulated through winter.
February
- Prune roses between February 15 and March 15 and clean up the rose beds.
- Plant new rose bushes when they arrive.
- Watch the weather carefully and protect bushes if a freeze is eminent.
March
- As leaves appear, start your fertilizer program.
- Start your spraying schedule for disease and insect control.
- Apply organic fertilizers.
April
- Continue fertilizer program.
- Continue spraying routine; apply Diazinon for rose midge problems.
- Water as needed. Roses required 2 inches of water per week.
- Start applying liquid fertilizer.
- Cut spent blooms to encourage new growth. (Deadheading).
May
- Continue fertilizer program.
- Continue spraying routine; apply Diazinon for rose midge problems.

- Top all rose bushes back to about 1/2 their height to protect them from being up-rooted during winter winds. Postpone severe pruning until February.
- Spray with Lime/Sulfur spray to defoliate and eradicate insects and diseases from the past season.
- Water as needed.
- Select and order new roses for next spring.
