Letter from the President
By Terry Ellis
President, Raleigh Rose Society
Greetings and Happy Fall,
Many thanks to Dave Illg and Darrell
Kohlmann for speaking at the September meeting. I hope some of you are able to go to the state fair and see
the flower show. I went last
weekend and it was beautiful.
This month we will be doing something
different at the request of our new members. They want to know what roses are being grown in our gardens
and why we select the varieties we currently grow. So I am asking all members
who have been with the society for more than two years to bring a list of all
varieties in your garden and bring in some cuttings to show. Make sure you can tell us the variety,
its growth habit, its resistance to disease and why you selected it for your
garden.
At the November meeting we will discuss
winter protection and planning for spring. We hope to have the 2002 rose catalogs so we can gaze
longingly at the new varieties we want to add to the garden next year.
I attended the District Rose Show in
Charlotte on Oct. 6th and was pleased with the attendance of many of our own
members. We are gearing up for the
Winter District meeting in January and will be getting the details out to you shortly. Please mark your calendars for the last
weekend in January and plan to join us for this wonderful weekend of sharing
with other rose enthusiasts
I hope everyone can join me at the
October meeting. Let's find out
what we can learn from each other.
See you at then!
Terry

Know Your Microclimate
Mike Denson of Charleston, SC, helps us to understand what a microclimate is and how that knowledge can help us grow better roses.
Many rose growers know about the USDA Zone Map, which breaks the continental United States in zones based on average annual minimum temperatures. What you may not know is that even though someone in Raleigh and someone in Clayton are in the same Zone, they may have very different results in growing roses. This is because of something called a microclimate.
A microclimate can be defined as a garden specific set of parameters that influence the growth and care of roses. Mostly, these are temperatures, hours of sunlight, rainfall and wind. You wouldn't think these would vary much within a Zone, but they do.
More information about this article can be found on pages 28 & 29 in the October 2001 edition of the American Rose magazine.
Join the American Rose Society today to receive this informative magazine at your home each month. Applications are available at the monthly meetings of the Raleigh Rose Society. A copy of the October edition will also be available for you to check out this article.
If you are unable to drive at night because of poor night vision or have no transportation and would like to attend the monthly meeting, RRS volunteers are ready and waiting for your call. We want you to join us.
To arrange for transportation, please call Terry Ellis at 676-0561.
